Animal Assisted Therapy....AKA Otis!
Otis is a qualified intervention dog. He participates in extensive training through Ability Dogs Canada with his handler, Jody. Otis is a 5 year old non-shedding bernedoodle who is gentle, engaging and loves people. Research has shown Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) to increase how much children speak within speech-language therapy sessions, and can help with motivation, engagement and enjoyment.
What might Otis do during a therapy session?
perform tricks to increase motivation, increase verbalization & reward effort
ring a bell (one of his favorites!)
use a speech button with messages such as 'good job!' or 'treat please!'
provide comfort by sitting nearby for pets or by placing his head on a lap upon command
simply watch from his mat
